Introduction /Preface

Dear friends,

I am working in the film field for the last twenty five years. I had worked as an assistant director, associate director, assistant writer, writer and in many other sections in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.

Usually I would like to share my experience and what I saw, heard and learned in this period, to my friends. In this meantime I wrote a few books also. Among that, I wrote a book related to the film field in the name, ‘Thiraippatam Thayaarippalarkalin Kalai’ (Cinema, the Art of Producers).

And I like to share many other things to my friends. Usually I used to look everything related to film field from my point of view, an alternate view. That is why I had some perception different from others in many subjects. I want to tell these in detail.

But, in the meantime I had planned and made arrangements for my debut film, to be produced and directed by myself. So, I like to tell all those matters after I become a director and producer.  But the Corona lockdown came when I am ready to start my project and it made all the plans to be postponed. Now, only after the lockdown period I could restart the works.

Before that, to use this period for some good reasons, I tried to make some videos, like stories, lessons and others. Along with them, as a part of the new attempt of our Film Literature Confluence, as Online Sangamam, planned to share something as seminar series. When think like that, this is the first topic came in mind to tell in that style, ie, ‘Neengalum Cinema Etukkalaam’ which means, ‘You Can Make Movies’. (Literally ‘You Also Can Make Movies’)

Because, for the time being Corona lockdown has came to its finishing stage. The office bearers of theatre associations had told that there is a chance to reopen the theatres soon. Anyhow on the 1^st of next month or next to that month, theatre shall be opened. Again the cinema will come to the usual stage, as in the past.

The film personalities, especially the producers, keep a low profile in this lockdown period, will come forward to make films once again. Many newcomers also will come in this line as everyone heard, understand and fascinated by the details about OTT platform in this lockdown period. There is a belief that for the small and medium budget films it will be good market.

Because of all these reasons, there is a chance for many persons to enter the film field. There is a chance for the persons already in the field also to start films with new thoughts and energy.  In this time, I think it is not good to avoid telling all the things I wanted to tell, I liked to tell. I think this is the right time to tell all those things. I think it my duty also. That is why I came forward to tell some facts under the topic ‘You can make movies’.

If you ask, “whom this seminar series is meant for?”. the answer is “it is for all related to film field.”

For all who are coming freshly. Always cinema has an attraction, and many from other fields and many areas will come to film field everyday. I think this is for all, who came like that.

For all who are in the field already. For all who search for chance, who got chance and making films and who produce those films also. I like to tell these things to all who are in the field like this.

I want to tell these things to the students, who studied or studying in institutes and colleges, especially the students of ‘visual communication’ and ‘film courses’.

Some persons working in other industries like IT, or in any other business, and will like to enter the film field. I think it will be useful for all those persons also.

Many persons, who are very talented, want to show their talent in any manner in the films. It will be useful for those persons also.

Many persons are making short films, documentaries or other attempts like that, to show their talents, and to prove their passions.   I want to tell these things to those persons also.

In total, I would like to tell all these to everyone who like cinema. But, there is difference, only one difference! I am here not to tell the ways to search chance in the film field, and I am trying to tell a single way to create the chance. I am inviting all to make films. I am trying my best to make everyone in film field to stand on their own feet.

If you show your talent once in the films, then bigger chances and success will come automatically. Here I am trying to tell the way for that first chance only.

To give confidence and to make self confident, I want to tell all these thing. I want to tell what I saw, heard, learned and experienced in my life, watched from an alternate point of view and what I felt, in a forceful way, as everyone can understand. I hope this will be useful for you and let us enter into the seminar.

 

Online Sangamam

Dear friends,

This is the tenth year for our Film Literature Confluence. We are conducting programs of films and film related topics for the last ten years continuously. Our confluence, started to unite the film and literary fields together and to make a friendship circle among the film fraternity, is successfully conducting the programs. We are the pioneers in a few things.

At that stage, only the films got awards or praised as a good art film only will be felicitated in functions. We are the first to conduct felicitation or review meets on two films selected as good films by friends, one art film and one commercial film the totals films released every month. After that see so many institutes, colleges and groups conducting meets on successful films.

We had decided to conduct the tenth anniversary for our confluence, really on a day in the last February or March. We had made all arrangements for that also.

We planned to start monthly meets on novels also like meets on films in the anniversary meet. As to begin the meets in that function, we invited novels published in the last year from the writers. We had started the works to select the novels for the function. For that purpose, we got recommendations from our friends too.

But because of the Corona lockdown, all the plan has to be postponed. And now we found no chance to conduct the meet in the near future of in this year. There in no chance to conduct not only the anniversary but also the monthly meets in halls. We don’t know when it can be resumed like the past in the next year also.

In this time, we see some of our friends and groups conducting meets through net work like zoom app. We think to bring our confluence also in that style to the next level. The Online Sangamam is the result of that thought.

We think to do something different from the usual style, and decided to get videos on a few topics from all the friends through email and to upload in our channel. And we had fixed the timetable of programs for this month also.

But there are some hindrances, like doubts and confusions to conduct the meets. There is doubt that it will also become an usual meet. Because, we have to invite chief guests, have to make them speak on the topics, film or novel, and have to upload only those videos. But, when starting the Online Sangamam in a new style, we have an idea to make all friends to talk about the topic and to avoid usual speeches of chief guests. We had made arrangements for that also.

But, there is a problem again. Usually so many films will be released every month and we can select two films from that list and can conduct felicitation or review meets. Like that, novels also will be published in many numbers and we select one or two to speak. But for the time being, only a few films are releasing in the site like OTT platforms. And only one or two books are releasing in the platforms like Kindle. We think it will not be fair to select films or novels from this list.  So decided to postpone this programs also for the time being.

  First let the lockdown is over, let the full relaxations come, and we can conduct the programs regularly when the films and books released as usual. Now, as a new attempt in the Online Sangamam, as a need of this period, decided to conduct seminar series on film and literature related topics.

And we planning to start a seminar series on the topic ‘Neegalum Cinema Etukkalaam’ (You Can Make Movies) now.

Already I had uploaded many small videos in this site itself, and done it more in this lockdown period. Uploaded many videos as stories, lessons or special videos. And I shared one or two among those videos to my friends and request their opinions and suggestions. And decided to change everything accordingly. Now I had decided to everything freshly as new ones. As a part of that, this seminar series will be also uploaded.

As already noted, Online Sangamam is a new attempt, and I would like to upload opinions of all friends also in the video format. This will be chance or platform for that purpose. Friends should send their videos through the email ‘filmfriendship@gmail.com’ only, and make them within the duration of five minutes. From the videos, selected ones will be published here.

If anybody could not make videos and like to write, they can type, not more than two pages, and can send. Every post will be published in our filmfriendship.com site in writing.

When sending your opinions, you should remind one thing. I am telling it now only to avoid any problem in the future. Send your opinions by keeping in mind that, ‘the selected posts only will be published here, and the confluence has the right to shorten, compile with other opinions, and to print when get chance in future. நீங்களும் சினிமா எடுக்கலாம் - ஒரு அறிமுகம் அல்லது முகவுரை

நண்பர்களே,

 கடந்த இருபத்திஐந்து ஆண்டுகளாக நான் திரைத்துறையில் பணியாற்றி வருகிறேன். ஒரு உதவி இயக்குநராக, இணை இயக்குநராக, உதவி எழுத்தாளனாக, எழுத்தாளனாக, இப்படி பல தளங்களில் தமிழ், மலையாளம், தெலுங்கு, கன்னடம் ஆகிய மொழிகளில் பணியாற்றி வந்திருக்கிறேன். இந்த காலகட்டங்களில் நான் பெற்ற அனுபவங்களையும், பார்த்து, படித்து, கேட்டு தெரிந்துகொண்ட விஷயங்களையும் என்னுடைய நண்பர்களுக்கு பகிர்ந்துகொள்ள ஆசைப்படுகிறேன்.

இந்த காலகட்டங்களில் ஒரு சில புத்தகங்களையும் நான் எழுதியிருக்கிறேன். அவற்றில் திரைத்துறை சார்ந்து திரைப்படம் தயாரிப்பாளர்களின் கலை (Cinema, the Art of Producers) என்ற புத்தகத்தையும் எழுதியிருக்கிறேன். மேலும் பல விஷயங்களை நண்பர்களிடம் பகிர்ந்துகொள்ள ஆசைப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன்.

பொதுவாகவே திரைத்துறையை சார்ந்த எந்த ஒரு விஷயத்தையும் நான் என்னுடைய பாணியில் ஒரு மாற்றுப்பார்வையில் பார்ப்பது உண்டு. அதனாலேயே பல விஷயங்களிலும் மற்றவர்கள் பார்ப்பதைவிட வித்தியாசமான ஒரு எண்ணம் எனக்கு இருக்கிறது. இதையெல்லாம் எடுத்துச் சொல்லவேண்டும் என்று ஆசைப்பட்டேன். ஆனால் இதற்கு மத்தியில் என்னுடைய முதல் படத்தை நானே தயாரித்து இயக்க முடிவு செய்து, அதற்கான ஏற்பாடுகளையும் செய்து வந்திருக்கிறேன்.

அதை எடுத்து முடித்தபின் ஒரு இயக்குநராக, தயாரிப்பாளராக இந்த விஷயங்களை எல்லாம் சொல்லலாம் என்று ஆசைப்பட்டிருந்தேன். ஆனால் அந்த படத்தை ஆரம்பிக்கும் தருவாயில்தான் இந்த கொரானா ஊராடங்கு வந்து எல்லா திட்டங்களையும் தள்ளி வைக்கும்படி செய்து விட்டது. இனி இந்த ஊராடங்கெல்லாம் முடிந்தபின்னர்தான் என்னுடைய படவேலைகளை ஆரம்பிக்க முடியும்.

அதற்கு மத்தியில் இந்த ஊரடங்கை நல்லமுறையில் பயன்படுத்த சில விஷயங்களை வீடியோக்கள் மூலமாக சொல்லலாம் என்று முயற்சி செய்தேன். கதைகள், பாடங்கள் என பலவற்றையும். அதனுடன் சேர்ந்து நம்முடைய திரைப்பட இலக்கிய சங்கமத்தின் சார்பில் நடத்தும் ஆன்லைன் சங்கமம் என்ற பெயரில் ஒரு தொடர் உரையால் சில விஷயங்களை சொல்லலாம் என்று முடிவு செய்தேன்.

அப்படி முடிவெடுத்தபோது முதலில் வந்;த எண்ணம்தான் இந்த ‘நீங்களும் சினிமா எடுக்கலாம்’ என்கிற தலைப்பு. காரணம் தற்பொழுது கொரோனா ஊரடங்கு முடியும் தருவாயில் இருக்கிறது. தியேட்டர்கள் மீண்டும் திறக்க வாய்ப்பு இருப்பதாக தியேட்டர் சங்க நிர்வாகிகளே சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்கள். அது எப்படியோ அடுத்தமாதம் முதல் தேதி அல்லது அதற்கு அடுத்தமாதம் தியேட்டர்கள் திறக்கப்பட வாய்ப்பு இருக்கிறது. மீண்டும் சினிமா பழையதுபோல் சகஜநிலைக்கு வந்துவிடும்.

இந்த ஊரடங்கு காலத்தில் ஒதுங்கியிருந்த திரைத்துறையினர், முக்கியமாக தயாரிப்பாளர்கள் எல்லோருமே படம் எடுக்க முன் வருவார்கள். புதியதாக நிறைய பேர்; வருவார்கள். ஏனென்றால் இந்த ஊரடங்கு காலத்தில் ‘ஓடிடி’ போன்ற தளங்களைப்பற்றி நிறைய பேர் பேசியிருக்கிறார்கள். நிறைய பேர் அதைப்பற்றி அறிந்திருக்கிறார்கள். அதன் மீது ஒரு ஆசை வந்திருக்கிறது. சிறிய பட்ஜெட், மீடியம் பட்ஜெட் போன்ற படங்களுக்கு ஒரு தளமாக இருக்கும் என்கிற ஒரு நம்பிக்கை இருக்கிறது. இந்தகாரணங்களால் நிறைய புதிய ஆட்கள் திரைத்துறைக்கு வர வாய்ப்புகள் இருக்கிறது. ஏற்கனவே திரைத்துறையில் இருப்பவர்கள் புதிய பாணியில், ஒரு புத்துணர்ச்சியுடன் படங்களை ஆரம்பிக்கும் வாய்ப்பு இருக்கிறது.

இந்த சமயத்தில் நான் சொல்லவேண்டிய விஷயங்களை, சொல்ல நினைத்த விஷயங்களை சொல்லாமல் இருப்பது நல்லதல்ல என்று எனக்கு தோன்றியது. இப்பொழுது இந்த சமயத்தில் சொல்வதுதான் சரியாக இருக்கும் என்றும் தோன்றுகிறது. அது சொல்வது என்னுடைய கடமை என்றுகூட எனக்கு தோன்றுகிறது. அதனால்தான் இந்த தலைப்பு!

‘நீங்களும் சினிமா எடுக்கலாம்’ என்ற தலைப்பில் அனைவருக்குமாக சில விஷயங்களை சொல்லலாம் என்று முன்வந்திருக்கிறேன்.

இந்த தொடர்உரை யாருக்காக என்று கேட்டால் இது திரைத்துறையை சார்ந்த அனைவருக்குமானது. புதியதாக வருபவர்களுக்கு! எப்பொழுதுமே சினிமாவுக்கு ஒரு ஈர்ப்பு இருக்கிறது. நிறைய துறைகளிலிருந்து ஊடகங்களிலிருந்து சினிமாவை நோக்கி நிறைய பேர் வந்துகொண்டே இருப்பார்கள். அப்படி புதியதாக வரும் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் சொல்லவேண்டிய விஷயமாக நான் இதை நினைக்கிறேன். திரைத்துறையில் வாய்ப்பை தேடிக்கொண்டு இருப்பவர்களும், வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்து படங்களை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு இருப்பவர்களும், அந்த படங்களை எடுக்கும் தயாரிப்பாளர்களும் இப்படியாக ஏற்கனவே திரைத்துறையில் இருப்பவர்களுக்கும் இந்த விஷயங்களை சொல்லவேண்டும் என்று ஆசைப்படுகிறேன்.

சிலர் கல்லூரிகளிலும் இன்ஸ்டியு+ட்டுகளிலும் சினிமாவைப் பற்றி அதாவது விஷூவல் கம்யு+னிகேஷன், பிலிம்கோர்ஸ் போன்றவற்றை படித்துக்கொண்டு சினிமாத்துறையில் நுழையலாம் என்று இருக்கிறார்கள். அப்படி படித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் மாணவர்களுக்கும் இந்த விஷயத்தை சொல்லலாம் என்று ஆசைப்படுகிறேன்.

நிறையபேர் ஐடி போன்ற கம்பெனிகளில் வேலை செய்துகொண்டு அல்லது வேறு கம்பெனிகளில் வேலை செய்துகொண்டு, வேறு வேறு வியாபாரங்கள் செய்து கொண்டு, அப்படியே சினிமாவில் நுழையலாம் என்று ஆசைப்பட்டுக்கொண்டு வருபவர்களும் இருக்கிறார்கள். அவர்களுக்கும் இது பொருத்தமாக இருக்கும் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

நிறைய திறமைசாலிகள் தங்களது திறமைகளை எப்படியாவது சினிமாவில் காட்டிவிடலாம் என்று ஆசைப்படுகிறார்கள். அவர்களுக்கும் இது பொருத்தமாக இருக்கும்.

தங்களது திறமைகளை காட்ட, சினிமா மீது இருக்கும் மோகத்தை காட்ட, அந்த ஆசைகளை காட்ட குறும்படங்கள் போன்ற படங்கள் அல்லது டாக்குமென்டரி, இப்படி ஏதோ ஒரு விதத்தில் தங்களது திறமைகளை காட்ட நினைக்கும் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் இதை சொல்ல ஆசைப்படுகிறேன்.

மொத்தத்தில் சினிமாவை நேசிக்கும் அனைவருக்குமாக இதை சொல்ல விரும்புகிறேன்! ஆனால் ஒரே ஒரு வித்தியாசம்!

“இங்கே நான் சினிமாவில் வாய்ப்பு தேடுவதற்கான வழிகளை சொல்ல விரும்பவில்லை. வாய்ப்பை உருவாக்குவதற்கான ஒருவழியை மட்டும்தான் சொல்ல விரும்புகிறேன்”.

எல்லோரையும் படம் எடுக்க அழைக்கிறேன். ஒவ்வொருவரும் திரைப்படத்துறையில் தங்கள் சொந்தக்கால்களில் நிற்க வழிகாட்டுவதற்கு என்னால் முடிந்த சிறு முயற்சியை செய்ய நினைக்கிறேன்.

ஒருமுறை உங்கள் திறமையை சினிமாவில் காட்டிவிட்டால் அதன்பிறகு பெரிய வாய்ப்புகளும் வெற்றிகளும் தானாகவே வந்துவிடும். அந்த முதல் வாய்ப்பு நாமே உருவாக்குவதற்கான வழியைத்தான் இங்கே நான் சொல்ல விரும்புகிறேன். அதற்கான தன்னம்பிக்கையை ஊட்ட, நம்பிக்கை பெற இதனால் செய்யமுடியும் என்று நான் நம்புகிறேன்.

அந்த விஷயங்களை, நான் பார்த்து, கேட்டு, படித்து அனுபவித்த விஷயங்களை ஒரு மாற்றுப்பார்வையில் பார்த்து புரிந்துகொண்ட விஷயங்களை, கொஞ்சம் அழுத்தமாக எல்லா நண்பர்களுக்கும் புரியவைக்கும் விதமாக சொல்ல ஆசைப்படுகிறேன். இது உங்கள் அனைவருக்கும் பயனுள்ளதாக இருக்கும் என்று நம்பி நம்முடைய உரைக்குள் செல்கிறேன்..
