Friendship

 

செயற்கரிய யாவுள நட்பின் அதுபோல்

வினைக்கரிய யாவுள காப்பு.                                 781

Seyarkariya yaavula natpin athupōl

Vinaikkariya yaavula kaappu.                              

நட்புபோல் அரியபொருள் ஏது அதுபோல்

செயற்கரிய காவல் ஏது.

Natpupōl ariyaporul ēthu athupōl

Seyarkariya kaaval ēthu.

Which is rarer than the friendship and what is a

More powerful guard than friendship.

 

நிறைநீர நீரவர் கேண்மை பிறைமதிப்

பின்னீர பேதையார் நட்பு.                                        782

Niraineera neeravar kēnmai piraimathip

Pinneera pēthaiyaar natpu.                        

அறிவுடையார் நட்பு வளர்பிறை போன்று

அறிவிலார் நட்பு தேய்பிறை.

Arivudaiyaar natpu valarpirai pōnru

Arivilaar natpu thēypirai.

The friendship of the intelligent is like waxing moon

And that of ignorant is like waning moon.

 

நவில்தொறும் நூல்நயம் போலும் பயில்தொறும்

பண்புடை யாளர் தொடர்பு.                                     783

Navilthorum noolnayam pōlum payilthorum

Panpudai yaalar thodarpu.                         

நூல்பொருள் கற்கக்கற்க இன்பம் பண்புடையார்

நட்பு பழகப்பழக இன்பம்.           

Noolporul karkakkarka inpam panpudaiyaar

Natpu pazhakappazhaka inpam.

The friendship with cultered men are like learning books,

That taste sweeter when learn more and more.

 

நகுதற் பொருட்டன்று நட்டல் மிகுதிக்கண்

மேற்சென் றிடித்தற் பொருட்டு.                            784

Nakuthar poruttanru nattal mikuthikkan

Mērsen riditthar poruttu.               

மகிழும் பொருட்டல்ல நட்பு தவறினை

முன்சென்று கண்டித்தல் பொருட்டு.

Makizhum poruttalla natpu thavarinai

Munsenru kanditthal poruttu.

The friendship is not meant for mere joy, but to

Criticize when doing mistakes.

 

புணர்ச்சி பழகுதல் வேண்டா உணர்ச்சிதான்

நட்பாங் கிழமை தரும்.                                       785

Punarcchi pazhakuthal vēndaa unarcchithaan

Natpaam kizhamai tharum.                        

புணர்ந்து பழகுதல் வேண்டாம் நட்பிற்கு

உணர்ச்சியே உரிமை தரும்.

Punarnthu pazhakuthal vēndaam natpirku

Unarchiyē urimai tharum.

No need of physical contacts for friendship,

Feelings alone will give the rights.

 

முகநக நட்பது நட்பன்று நெஞ்சத்

தகநக நட்பது நட்பு.                                                           786

Mukanaka natpathu natpanru nenjat

Thakanaka natpathu natpu.                       

முகம்மலர கொள்வது நட்பல்ல நெஞ்சத்து

அகம்மலர கொள்வதே நட்பு.

Mukammalara kolvathu natpalla nenjaathu

Akammalara kolvathē natpu.

The friendship with smile on the face is not friendship

That which springs from the heart is friendship.

 

அழிவி னவைநீக்கி ஆறுய்த் தழிவின்கண்

அல்லல் உழப்பதாம் நட்பு.                                     787

Azhivi navaineekki aaruyt thazhivinkan

Allal uzhappathaam natpu.                        

தீயவை நீக்கி நல்வழிசெலுத்தி அழிவில்

உடன் அனுபவித்தல் நட்பு.

Theeyavai neekki nalvazhiselutthi azhivil

Udan anupavitthal natpu.

Avoiding the bad, steering in the right way and

Accompanying in defeats is friendship.

 

உடுக்கை இழந்தவன் கைபோல ஆங்கே

இடுக்கண் களைவதாம் நட்பு.                                788

Udukkai izhanthavan kaipōla aankē

Idukkan kalaivathaam natpu.                    

ஆடை இழந்தவன் கைபோல அவ்விடம்

துன்பத்தை நீக்குதல் நட்பு.

Aadai yizhanthavan kaipōla avvidam

Thunpatthai neekkuthal natpu.

Like the hands of one who lost his dress, friendship

Is that which remove the distress there.

 

நட்பிற்கு வீற்றிருக்கை யாதெனிற் கொட்பின்றி

ஒல்லும்வாய் ஊன்றும் நிலை.                            789

Natpirku veetrirukkai yaathenir kotpinri

Ollumvaay oonrum nilai.                           

நட்பின் சிம்மாசனம் யாதெனில் மறுப்பின்றி

முடிந்தவரை உதவும் நிலை.

Natpin simmaasanam yaathenil maruppinri

Mudinthavarai uthavum nilai.

The throne of friendship is that the state of helping

Wherever possible without hesitation.

 

இனையர் இவரெமக் கின்னம்யாம் என்று

புனையினும் புல்லென்னும் நட்பு.                       790

Inaiyar ivaremak kinnamyaam enru

Punaiyinum pullennum natpu.                  

இத்தகைய அன்பர் அன்புடையோம் என்று

புகழ்ந்தாலும் குறைந்திடும் நட்பு.

Itthakaiya anpar anpudaiyōm enru

Pukazhnthaalum kurainthidum natpu.

The friendship will be diminished, even if elaborates

Like ‘how much dear’ and ‘being dear’.
